MLEMS Participates in File of Life and Yellow Dot Programs
The “Yellow Dot” Program is designed to assist Mount Laurel Residents and our local emergency first responders in the event of an automobile accident or other medical emergency involving the participant’s vehicle. The program can help save lives during an emergency by reducingthe time it takes to gather important information at a time when accident victims may be unable to communicate for themselves.
Participants of the program will receive a “Yellow Dot” decal, a “Yellow Dot” Folder and an information form. Participants record vital information on the form, including:
- Emergency contact information
- Personal physician’s information
- Medical conditions
- Recent surgeries
The form is placed in the folder and the folder is placed in the glove compartment of the participant's vehicle. A “Yellow Dot” decal on the driver’s side rear window of a vehicle alerts first responders to check in the glove compartment for the corresponding “Yellow Dot” folder. Having this information following an accident helps first responders positively identify the person, get in touch with family or emergency contacts, and ensures that the person’s current medications and pre-existing medical conditions are considered when treatment is administered for injuries.
File of Life
The “File of Life” Program is designed to assist Mount Laurel Residents and our local emergency first responders in the event of a medical emergency at the participant's home. The “File of Life” is a mini medical history posted on the outside of one’s refrigerator. The “File of Life” card enables first responders to obtain quick medical history when a patient is unable to offer one and helps to eliminate the risk of a patient in a frightened state, forgetting to mention something important. The card, which is kept in a red plastic pocket labeled “File of Life” lists the following information:
- Patients name
- Emergency contact
- Medical insurance information
- Health problems
- Medications and dosages
- Recent surgeries
- Health care proxy
The entire packet is held with a magnet to the outside of the refrigerator.
The “Yellow Dot” and “File of Life” Programs are a free service provided to Mount Laurel Residents of all ages, with an emphasis on our senior citizens. The Program is being funded by Mount Laurel Emergency Medical Services, Inc. a 501 (c) (3) volunteer organization.
